In todays post I am sharing with you two important web tools that you can use with students in class to create interactive timelines. These timelines can include a wide variety of multimedia materials including: text, images, video, maps and many more. And in the case of Silk, there is even the possibility to invite collaborators to help with editing. Also, both of these apps are available for iPad users.
1- MyHistory
Watch and read thousands of fascinating timelines, or create your own. Complete with text, video and pictures to create a dynamic timeline mashup. Using myHistro, you can combine maps and timelines seamlessly into one great presentation, convert any public timeline into a personal pdf file, or export it into Google Earth format for offline storage. All completed timelines can be embedded into your blog and websites for maximum exposure.
2- Silk
Silk is another excellent tool for creating interactive visualizations. You can use Silks drag and drop tools to easily add images, videos, tables, maps, and charts. Silk also allows you to convert your spreadsheets into Silk pages. You can invite anyone to edit and publish data to your Silk page. There are several video tutorials in the site to guide you through the process of building your own Silk visualizations.
Watch this video to have a preliminary idea of what Silk is all about.

Terrific Timeline Creation Tool for Students (Works on Chromebooks Too)
January, 2015
Timeline, as its name indicate, is a very good tool from Read Write Think that you can use to create web based timelines. The tool is very simple and students can use it to graphically represent a sequence of data (events, facts..,etc) along a chronological line. These timelines can be arranged by by date, time or event.
To start creating a timeline, head over to this page. Type in your name and project title then hit start. Now click anywhere on the timeline to add an item at that location. To edit an item, double click it. You can then customize the content and placement of your items as you like. Drag to adjust positions, click on the bin icon to delete and when you are done click on finish to save your work to your computer or share it with others.
Timeline works on both computer and Chromebooks.

An Excellent New Tool for Creating Multimedia Timelines for Your Class
December 6, 2014
HSTRY is a very good web tool for creating multimedia timelines in class. The process is very simple and easy. Just sign up either as a teacher or a student, choose the timeline you want to work on and start adding your events. You can add images, videos, and audio. The great thing about HSTRY is that it allows teachers to create a classroom and invite students to join it. Within this classroom, teachers will be able to share timelines with their students and view the ones they create. Teachers can also make their timelines interactive by adding questions for students to answer.
HSTRY works on different devices including Chromebooks and iPads.

A Great Tool to Create 3D Timelines in Class
November 6, 2014
Tiki-Toki is a powerful web tool that allows you to create visually appealing and interactive multimedia timelines. This app is web-based and does not require any software installation. TikiToki timelines can include a wide variety of materials such as images, text, and videos (from YouTube and Vimeo or AVIS). What's more, TikiToki now supports 3D timelines which means that you can both create and view timelines in 3D. To activate the 3d view for your timeline, open the timeline for editing. Then choose the 'Settings' tab in the admin panel, and click on the '3d settings' button at the top centre. This will open a new pop-up with all the options available for customising the 3d view. Here is an example of a 3D timeline.
As a teacher you can use TikiToki for a variety of purposes. You can use it to illustrate historical events or figures or to chronicle the works of a famous author. You can also use it to help students craft a personal narrative or to sketch out character development in a literary work...etc. The great thing about TikiToki's timelines is the multiplicity of options it offers to its users. For instance, students can create a timeline around a historical figure and record their own voice to accompany it. They can also illustrate their points with videos from YouTube or Vimeo. The end creation can be easily shared with others or embedded in classroom website or blog ( embedding feature is only available for premium users).
The free account of TikiToki is limited for it allows you to create only one timeline. However there is a Teacher account (it is not free) which offers more features including : creating several timelines, embedding of timelines, and group editing.
